The highlights this weekend:

Fox marks its birthday with a little help from its friends. Ryan Seacrest hosts “Fox’s 25th AnniversarySpecial” from 8 to 10 p.m. Sunday. The special follows the first “Married … With Children” at 7 p.m. and the 500th “Simpsons” episode at 7:30.

Fox has been the network of brash characters: Al Bundy, Bart Simpson, Fox Mulder, Jack Bauer, Dr. Gregory House. The guest list includes Hugh Laurie (“House”), Calista Flockhart (“Ally McBeal”), Kiefer Sutherland (“24″) and Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny (“The X-Files”). The special reunites the “Married … With Children” cast: Christina Applegate, David Faustino, Ed O’Neill and Katey Sagal.

The other stars include Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher of “That ’70s Show”; Shannen Doherty and Jason Priestley of “Beverly Hills, 90210″; and Keenen Ivory Wayans of “In Living Color.” “American Idol,” Fox’s biggest hit, will be celebrated by judges Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.

Will the special be as brash as its network?

Also this weekend:

***The HBO comedy “Veep,” starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the U.S. vice president, debuts at 10 p.m. Sunday. It’s a deeply annoying show about a self-absorbed politician and her goofy, incompetent staff. “Parks and Recreation” pulls off a similar premise with far wittier results.

***Sunday will be packed with new drama, including “Mad Men” and “The Killing” on AMC, “Game of Thrones” on HBO and “Harry’s Law” on NBC. “Once Upon a Time” offers the first for four new episodes at 8 p.m. Sunday on ABC. In an intriguing preview, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) confronts Regina (Lana Parrilla).

On “The Good Wife,” at 9 p.m. Sunday on CBS, the guest stars include David Paymer, Stephen Root and Julianne Nicholson. “The Good Wife” presents its third-season finale on April 29.

***PBS’ “Masterpiece” offers “Birdsong” at 9 p.m. Sunday. The lavish World War I drama, based on Sebastian Faulks’ novel, could appeal to fans of “Downton Abbey” because of the era and the sweeping romance. The two-part miniseries showcases Eddie Redmayne, who played the production assistant infatuated with Marilyn Monroe in “My Week With Marilyn.”

***To get ready for its 25th anniversary, Fox will be serving up fresh prime-time fare this weekend. There are new episodes of “The Finder” and “Fringe” tonight. A two-hour “America’s Most Wanted” special airs at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Irish actress Séainín Brennan has joined the cast of BBC Two thriller The Fall.

The Hidden star will appear opposite Gillian Anderson in the psychological drama.

Brennan will play Liz Tyler, a young woman who becomes the target of a serial killer (Once Upon A Time’s Jamie Dornan).

“I am thrilled and excited about taking on the role of Liz Tyler,” she said.

“it’s an emotionally-charged performance which takes the character, and the audience, on an emotional rollercoaster that will grip and enthral lovers of quality drama.”

The Fall has been written by Allan Cubitt (The Runaway, Murphy’s Law) and will also star Gerard McCarthy (Hollyoaks).

“Allan Cubitt is such a brilliant writer,” said Brennan. “So to be given the chance to play one of his characters is a career highlight for me.

“I have had the honour of working with some amazing actors at the top of their craft so it will be a huge honour working with Gillian, Jamie and the rest of the fantastic cast on The Fall.”

The Fall is currently filming on-location in Belfast and will air on BBC Two later this year.

At the surprisingly tiny height of 5’2″, Gillian Anderson was a full 10 inches shorter than her X-Files co-star David Duchovny. So, how did the crew save Anderson from having to jump up and down so she wasn’t having some important, expository conversation with Duchovny’s nipples? The answer is an apple box, a common tool used for a lot of television and film actors whose height doesn’t really jibe with other actors in a scene. Generally, they are 8″x20″x12″, but since the height disparity between the X-Files stars was exceptionally great, Anderson’s slightly higher “Scully Box” was measured at about “an apple and a half.” The actress actually referred to it as the “Gilly Box,” and sometimes she would forget she was on it — and then fall off the box during a serious scene.

You’re thinking about how much you miss The X-Files now, aren’t you? So are we. We are not alone.
